UCAS Clearing Guide
Quick answer
  • Clearing opens in July and closes mid-October each year.
  • It is for any UCAS applicant without a confirmed place — including those who missed grades, declined offers or applied late.
  • You can hold one Clearing offer at a time, but can change your mind.
  • Most placements happen by phone between 8am and 12pm on results day.
  • UKUNI Admission supports last-minute applicants with shortlists and phone scripts on the day.

What is UCAS Clearing?

UCAS Clearing is the system that matches unplaced applicants with universities that still have vacancies. It runs from July to mid-October each year, but the busiest period is the week of A-Level results day in mid-August.

Despite its last-minute reputation, Clearing is now mainstream — over 70,000 students enrolled through Clearing in 2024, including thousands at Russell Group universities.

Who is eligible for Clearing?

You are in Clearing if any of the following apply:

  • You applied through UCAS but didn't receive any offers.
  • You declined all the offers you received.
  • You didn't meet the conditions of your Firm or Insurance offer.
  • You applied after the 30 June deadline.
  • You decided to change your university choice after results day (using Clearing Plus or self-release).

Results day Clearing — hour by hour

On results day, the difference between a confident placement and a stressful scramble is preparation. Here's the timeline UKUNI advisors follow with our students:

  • Night before — finalise a Clearing shortlist of 5 backup universities and have phone numbers saved.
  • 06:00 — log in to UCAS Hub to check your status; if updated, the next step depends on the outcome.
  • 08:00 — collect results from school/college.
  • 08:00–12:00 — peak Clearing call period; call shortlist in priority order.
  • After receiving a verbal offer — add the Clearing choice in UCAS Hub within the deadline given (usually same day).
  • Confirm Student Finance update with new course details.

What to say on the Clearing call

Universities want to confirm three things quickly: your UCAS personal ID, your achieved grades, and your genuine interest in the course. A typical successful call lasts 5–10 minutes. Be ready with:

  • Your 10-digit UCAS personal ID.
  • Your achieved grades and qualifications.
  • Two to three sentences on why you want this course at this university.
  • Your contact details and a quiet space to take a call back if needed.

How UKUNI Admission supports Clearing

Our Clearing service runs from early July through October. We build personalised shortlists, prepare you for phone interviews, contact universities on your behalf where permitted, and support you through Student Finance updates and accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

UCAS Clearing Guide — FAQs

When does UCAS Clearing 2026 open?+

Clearing 2026 opens on 5 July 2026 and runs until mid-October 2026. The busiest day is A-Level results day in mid-August.

Can I go through Clearing if I have an offer?+

Yes. Even if you have a Firm or Insurance offer, you can use Self-Release in UCAS Hub to release yourself into Clearing if you change your mind about where you want to go.

Are Clearing courses lower quality?+

No. Universities use Clearing because their final intake numbers are still being managed — many top-ranked Russell Group universities offer hundreds of Clearing places each year on the same courses as their Firm-offer students.

Can I get Student Finance for a Clearing place?+

Yes. You can update your university and course choice in your Student Finance account at any point — repayments and entitlement are unaffected.

How many universities can I call in Clearing?+

You can speak to as many universities as you like. You can only hold one Clearing choice at a time, but you can release it and pick a different one if you change your mind.
